If TNA is doing something right, then it’s getting people Talking. As the old saying goes “No Publicity is Bad Publicity” and over the last few Months TNA’s on-going “negotiations” with The Phenomenal AJ Styles have dominated the News Feeds.
Now TNA usually gets a lot of Bad Press and a lot of Heat and there certainly is no shortage of negativity surrounding the Company in its 12 Years of existence. Though saying how much negativity they appear to attract, AJ’s current position is blowing up. The very height of this Popularity can be seen with TNA’s TV Rating from the past week in America, drawing far higher than their average and the highest Ratings they’ve had in quite some time. The big draw of that Episode? AJ Styles returns to TNA for one more Match to crown the Undisputed World Champion.
The question on everyone’s minds is simple, “What’s going on with AJ Styles and TNA: Wrestling?”
Clearly no-one actually knows the ins and outs of the deal, but over the last few years we’ve seen TNA try their hand at throwing the Audience off of their scent in terms of Story-Telling. The main reason Wrestling Storylines are ruined these days, is because of the Internet. People have spotted Stars in the same Cities around the World the Live Shows are running, or contracts are made public. This information spreads like wild fire. Now there is certainly no shortage of Rumours either and it’s those that have kept this Story on everyone’s radar.
In 2011 the internet got wind of the whole Bully Ray and Devon contract negotiation difficulties with TNA. Within that was Bully trying to get them better contracts but everything appears to be falling through etc. And in the end, it was Bully who worked out a new Deal and Devon who didn’t and left the company. This was all covered online, and then played up by both sides, with TNA taking it to Television with Hogan thanking Devon in a minimal promo. Of course at Bound for Glory in 2011 Devon was the first unmasked member of The Aces and Eights, and under no circumstances was all of this a coincidence. No matter is said, this development was clearly planned.
Now AJ Styles has been having numerous issues with TNA, or so they say. But every step of the way no matter what AJ has done or said, it’s always seemed “in-character” to his most recent persona.
Even now with the latest “TNA will always be my home” Impact 365 released after AJ’s losing effort on last week’s Impact broadcast. More so is the up and coming “Leaving an Impact” Shoot Interview with AJ Styles:
In this AJ is talking about all of the mistakes TNA has taken, and every single one of them are things TNA and Dixie have taken a lot of Internet heat and hate from. Now AJ himself has publically endorsed both Hulk Hogan’s contributions and even the Claire Lynch storyline.
The endorsing of the Claire Lynch story was that yes it’s ridiculous, but it’s pay-off is awesome. And I believe, this is the pay-off.
TNA pride themselves on listening to the Fans, all of the recent issues are aimed at Dixie Carter. But think about it, Dixie changed to a Heel on-air Character because she can the brunt of the hate from the Internet. They already blame her for these problems, so she owns up to them. Not only that, but the internet’s response to Dixie is what turned her character, one of the smartest Heel Turns in recent Wrestling History.
Dixie nor anyone associated with TNA are going to run their own business into the ground, they have a game-plan. And if last week’s Show was any indication, then that Game-Plan worked off as shown in the Ratings. With AJ Styles “leaving TNA”, Jeff Hardy’s recent departure which was quite clearly “Storyline Driven” even down to the recent resignation of Jeff Jarrett.
A whole bunch of Rumours circulated about TNA selling the Company, even though the Carter family publically announced the opposite. To me, that shows that they were out-sourcing possibilities of a new Wrestling Promotion, and to the outside world, it looked as if they were trying to Sell.
Now Jarrett’s departure was straight after, and ever excuse or rumour is linked to Dixie Carter. They can’t Re-Brand TNA in an easy way so they’re going to take the “Superior” approach.
This is where I show my Comic-Book Nerdyness, but Dan Slott – lead Spider-Man Writer for the last few years at Marvel, re-branded Spider-Man by killing off Peter Parker. They did this by mind-swapping Parker with the dying Doctor Octopus’ last efforts for life. The result being Doc Oct put his mind into Peter’s body, and Peter’s in the soon to be dead villainous foe.
With Doc Oct’s mind within the “Superior Spider-Man” he launched many new additions to the over 50year old Character. A New Suit, Gadgets, a new wave of Technological enhancements like Bots around the city to spot crime and report crime, an Island set up and ran by himself with black-mailed funding from the Government to create a type of Law Enforcement under his own Ruling. All of this was to Give Spider-Man a much needed Boost into the Modern way of Life, with it making Sense.
So apply that formula to TNA, Jarrett leaves, sets up a New Wrestling Promotion, they bring back the Six-Sided Ring, they bring in AJ Styles at the helm, they fill it with favourites from TNA Originals like Samoa Joe, maybe old foes. They pull in the TNA Audience, they pull in the old TNA audience, they capture a brand new audience and they create a whole new element within the Wrestling Industry.
Some time down the line when that is established and Dixie’s new Power-Driven TNA is established, they bring them together, creating a type of Invasion Storyline that brings back everything people loved about TNA and want back, with a new Wave of much needed Improvements and have pulled off something never been done in Wrestling before.
Of course, I could be completely wrong, but this sudden change of Heart from AJ Styles, not to mention the current Dixie angle and everything that is boiling over on both sides, it clearly is the heart of the idea, that acts as Gears turning all of this into one Game-Plan.
To further my theory, The Aces and Eights appeared to be an Invading Faction driven by a Desire to take back TNA. How many rumours went round about Eric Bischoff and Jeff Jarrett being involved and revealed as the true Leaders behind the faction. You can’t tell me that the person playing his mysterious leader is not Bischoff:
Then suddenly, Bully took the reins and it just sort of ended. I have no doubt that Bully was supposed to fall into Power, and then the whole Storyline would build on top of that with a true Fight for Power. But it all changed rather quickly, and the Storyline soon whittled into nothing and ran dry. Now why would that change of heart be? Because they had a better idea. And this idea re-brands TNA, rather than invades it. All the key players and Story momentum is still in place, only rather than having this “Aces and Eights Faction” – it’s all about what are these people doing on their own, outside of TNA.
One thing is for sure though, if this is what TNA is planning, think of how incredible it would be, and how significant it would be. On the other hand, I could be wrong, and TNA could literally be running themselves out of business to stay loyal to a storyline of running themselves out of business. People want to give them hate, but TNA is the fastest growing Wrestling Promotion of all time, in only 10 years they were established on Television, PPV buy-rates, doing things no-other company has done before them, they had Star-Power within a matter of Years of the likes of Sting and Jeff Hardy, they are the number one watched Wrestling Promotion in the UK, Germany and many other countries around the world.
Say what you want, but they’re not daft.
Though I could be one die-hard TNA Fan, just grabbing onto any possibilities.
But if you read between the lines, it seems something is forming. And whatever it is, it’s bound to be exciting.
